to nearly level alluvial fans and terraces. This mapping unit occurs in a small area
on the upper Terrace adjacent to Middle Creek, Section 13, T.SN R.86W at 6,800 feet
elevation.
Typically, the surface horizon has about a 5 inch layer of dark grayish brown
loam overlying heavier looms and clays. Mottling may be visible at the surface.
Calcareous material is encountered at depths greater than 21 inches.
This soil supports vegetative species used for livestock grazing; it previously was
in dryland hay production. The dominant vegetation is Bouteloua curtipendula side
oats gramagrass and Cirsium arvense Canada thi:;tle.
Permeability is very slow. Erosion hazard is low from water. Effective rooting
depth and ground water depth are at about 50 inches. Stoniness class is 0. Depth
to ground water varies with physiographic position.
Land capability unit is Iw.
MAP UNIT Gab: GAPO CLAY LOAM, 2 TO 8 PERCENT SLOPES
This deep, poorly drained, fine textured soil is formed in mixed alluvium on
• moderately sloping alluvial fans and terraces. Tliis mapping unit occurs in Section
19, T.SN R.85W at 6,800 feet elevation.
The soil profile in this mapping unit does not vary significantly in horizonation
or geomorphology from the series description, Gapo clay loam (pedonl~ 05-03-17-031).
Vegetation on this soil is predominately A~ropyron spp. wheatgrass and is used
for livestock grazing.
Permeability is very slow. Effective rootinci depth is about 50 inches. Depth
to ground water measures about 56 inches. Water erosion hazard is low. Stoniness
class is 0.
Land capability unit is Vw.
MAP UNIT HaB: HANDRAN STONY LOAM, 2 TO 8 PERCENT SLOPE
This deep to very deep, well-drained, loamy soil occurs on alluvial terraces and
terrace escarpments between bottomlands and high terraces boarding and areas
adjacent to Trout and Fish Creeks. The loamy soil overlies cobbles at about 2 feet.
This mapping unit occurs on the terrace escarpments above Trout Creek, west I/4
. Section 19 and east I/q Section 25, T.SN R.85 W at 6,850 to 6,975 feet elevation.
Typically, the surface horizon is a brown silty clay loam to loam texture of
2.3-9
