Nix Sand and Gravel Mine -Fact Sheet
permit. If Owens Bros. Concrete decides to mine the north parcel designated as
Stage II at some point in the future, we will be required to apply for a separate
USR permit or amendment, which is subject to the same comment period and
review process. In addition, the State of Colorado issues mining permits for the
"life of the mine" so that this non-renewable, protected resource can be
maximized for the benefit of all citizens.
Issue:
Proposed hours of operation call for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Response:
Page 5 of the Weld County USR permit application specifically describes hours
of operations as follows: 6 am - 10 pm for mining and processing, 6 am - 2 am
for maintenance and repairs, and 6 am - 5 pm for truck hauling. Twenty-four
hour operations are proposed only for administrative office functions, government
contracts and emergency operations. Under normal circumstances, the last haul
truck would likely leave the site around 4 pm and all other on-site operations
would cease prior to sunset. However, the Weld County Code provides for the
possibility of 24-hour operations in the case of emergency operations and
government contracts.
Issue:
Two hundred trucks will be entering and exiting the site per day.
Response:
As indicated in the Weld County USR permit application, an average of 83
vehicles will be entering and exiting the site per day. Of those, approximately 10
to 15 will be either cars or light trucks (pick-up trucks) used by the 5 permanent
employees and various vendors that may enter the site. In reality, the number of
hauling trucks entering and exiting the site will be closer to 73, per day, on
average.
2
