characteristics of the minable coal is quite good. However, surface
and ground water information is quite sparse. Primarily because
runoff seldom occurs and because the numerous underground mines
have disturbed the ground water, little information is currently
available for quantity and quality of these water resources.
However, the SOAP contractor will provide recommendations as to the
required ground water and surface water nanitoring stations in
order that the water resources be accurately determined for both
quantity and quality. Water quality of the existing surface and
groundwater resources is therefore not known due to the lack of
baseline data.
The area which GEC Minerals, Inc. currently mines and plans to
continue to mine is intersected by two ephemeral drainages known as
the Newlin Creek and Magpie Creek as shown on Map Nos. 8 and 9.
• These drainage patterns generally flow from Southwest to Northeast
toward the Arkansas River. The area which GEC Minerals, Inc. plans
to mine during the next five years flows into the Magpie Creek
drainage. Dorchester Colomine Coal, which is adjacent to GEC
Minerals, Inc. operation, has diverted the Magpie Creek around its
facilities and into an adjacent drainage which flows back into the
original Magpie Creek. This diversion passes through GEC Minerals,
Inc. property as shown on the Existing Structures Map No. 21. From
the GEC Minerals location, the Magpie Creek flows towards the
Northeast into Newlin Creek approximately one and one-half miles
downstream from the mine plan area.
The Newlin Creek ephemeral drainage lies north of the existing and
planned mining operation but is adjacent to areas which GEC Minerals,
Inc. plans to reclaim during the next five years. GEC Minerals,
Inc. has prepared a plan for constructing a new channel for the
Newlin Creek drainage to cross areas which have been disturbed by
previous mining. These plans have been approved and are located
• within Exhibit 11.
2.04-9
