Reclamation Plan
Pantaleo Pit Page 3
51 The following mix is adapted to the site, will serve the post-
mining use and will provide adequate soil protection. These
species will tolerate natural conditions and after full
establishment, will survive without irrigation.
Species Variety Mix Lbs/Acre*
sideoats grama Vaughn or Niner 35 3.2 '~
switchgrass / Blackwell 25 1.1
little bluestem Pastura / 15 1.1
blue grama Covington or Hachita 15 0.5~
sand dropseed 10 0.05
*seeding rates are given in pounds of Pure Live Seed IPLSI
PLS = purity xfigermination
`a%°~~''~40
6~ Seeding should be done using a grass drill. The drill should 6e
equipoed with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double
disk furrow openers, depth bands, and packer wheels or drag
chains. The distance between drill rows should not exceed 12
inches. Seed may be broadcast in areas which are inaccessible for
drilling. If the seed is broadcast, then the seeding rates in item
5 should be doubled. The broadcasted seed should be uniformly
distributed over the ground surface, and mixed into the soil with
a harrow or by hand raking. Planting (broadcast or drill method)
can be done anytime between November 1 and April 30. Do not seed
when the soil surface is frozen. The seeds should be planted
between 1/2 and 1.0 inch deep.
7) Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate
soil temperatures, and to improve soil moisture absorption and
holding capacity. Grass hay or cereal grain straw free of weed
seeds is recommended. Apply 4000 pounds of mulch/acre to the soil
surface. At least half of the material should be 10 inches or
more in length. Do not use fine materials. The mulch should be
anchored either with commercial netting products (on slopes
steeper than 3:1) or mechanically. The latter can be accomplished
using a heavy disk implement, with dull blades, to punch the mulch
into the soil 2 to 3 inches deep. Crimping should not sever the
mulch.
Do not mulch when wind velocities exceed 15 miles per hour. Well-
cured feedlot or barnyard manure may also be used as a combination
mulch/organic matter and nutrient source for the seeded area.
Recommended application rate is at least 20 tons per acre, spread
uniformly over the area. The manure must be of a type that has 600
or more, by weight, heavy chunks 5 inches or more in diameter.
Granular or powdery manure will not meet specifications. Repeated
applications of manure for fertilization effect are not
recommended, due to potential salt accumulation.
