Reclamation Plan
Pantaleo Pit Page 2
^~~
:1.3
v~
w,
I
The Natural Resources Conservation Service recommends the
following steps to revegetate the site:
1) Topsoil should be removed and stockpiled. When mining is
completed topsoil should be placed so that at least 6 inches of
topsoil material is covering the subsoil material. A greater depth
of topsoil will result in a higher rate of seeding success.
If the topsoil will not be used within one year then it should be
seeded with the seed mixture listed an item 5 to protect it from
erosion and keep it biologically active.
or approximate the surrounding landscape as closely as posse e. ~
Rough areas should be smoothed to permit easier seeding and ~~"
mulching. Ate least 18 inches of subso material should remain on-
site prior in e onso The s ial shou `~°'~y~+'
2) Prior to revegetation, the area should be banksloped so that no
slope exceeds a 3:1 slope. Slopes greater than 3:1 will need to
have some type of agronomy blanket applied after seeding to reduce
erosion and increase seeding success. Roads and other similarly
disturbed areas should be graded or reworked so as to blend into
'bl
not a near-cnmpac e ant roots weft not be able to grow in
heavily compacted subsoils and compaction reduces the amount of
water available to the plant. Additional soil material, topsoil
subsoil, will increase the success of the seeding. When
bankslooing and shaping of the subsoil is complete, scarify the
area to a depth of 6 inches to permit better bonding between the
topsoil and the subsoil. After scarification, the topsoil should
be uniformly spread over the area.
~~~
l 1`~
U
3) The seedbed should be well settled and firm, but friable enough
so that seed can be placed at the recommended seeding depth. The
ideal firmness is when a one-half inch boot print remains after
walking across the soil surface. If the topsoil is over-compacted
by traffic of equipment it should be tilled to break up root
restricting layers, harrowed and then rolled or packed to prepare
the required firm seedbed.
41 A soil test should be performed to determine the proper
fertilizer requirement. In lieu of a soil test, fertilize the
entire area with 40 pounds per acre each of available elemental
nitrogen (N1 and phosphoric acid 1P20~). The fertilizer must be
incorporated into the top 2 or 3 inches of soil using a disk or
harrow implement. Fertilizer should be applied immediately prior
to seeding, or at the time of seeding. See Item 7 for using manure
as a fertilizer.
