Box 580
Rye, CO 81069
Re: Reclamation Plan, Pantaleo Pit
This is in reference to an on-site investigation completed on
January 29, 1998 on a proposed gravel pit site. The purpose of the
investigation was to develop a reclamation plan to be implemented
after mining is completed. The pit site is located in the NW
quarter and the NE quarter of section 17 T21S Rb1W. The following
information may be used to fulfill reclamation requirements.
The site is not prime farmland. The owner of the land is Carl
Pantaleo. The operator, Kirkland Construction, will be
responsible for reclamation. The post-mining Iand use is
rangeland. It is not anticipated that groundwater will be
intercepted by this activity. There is an existing farm pond on
this site. If necessary, silt fences should be installed or
grading designed to prevent excessive sediment from entering the
pond on this site or farm land north of the pit site.
The soils found on this site are Cascajo very gravelly sandy loam,
5 to 25 percent slopes and Otero sandy- loam, 1 to 5 percent
slopes. These soils will be the primary soils for gravel
extraction. Soils are more fully described in the attached
material. This includes a description of the soil mapping units.
I have included copies of three tables from our soil survey data
base, Chemical Properties, Physical Properties and Construction
:Materials. Please note that these properties are typical of the
native, undisturbed soil.
The vegetation on the pit site consists primarily of grasses
including blue grama, sideoats grama, muhly, sand dropseed, hairy
tridens, galleta and red threeawn. Forbs and shrubs in the area
include sand sage, small soapweed, plains pricklypear, broom
snake week and sand sagebrush. Cover ranges from 5 to 10~ on the
slopes and 15 to 20Z on flatter areas. Production varies from 150
to 500 pounds per acre. See the attached for more detailed
information on plant composition based on the inventory conducted
January 29, 1998. The site's current ecological condition is fair,
related to rangeland productivity and composition.
