PROCEDURE tIVMI-1 <br />APPENDIX B <br />• <br />CORROSIVES (continued) <br />Page 2 of 9 <br />06/29/07 <br />Ferric Sulfate Powder Form <br />PPE: Chemical splash protection; respireior required; face~hield; rubber gloves; and rubber boots. <br />Response: <br />• Evaluate situation. <br />• Secure area. <br />• Rescue & First Aid, if necessary & possible. <br />• Avoid adding water. <br />• Contain spilled powders by covering with a tarp, if material may become wind carried. Contain <br />any liquids by damming and diking. <br />• Carefully sweep up spilled powders and retain material for evaluation for proper disposal. <br />• Absorb spilled liquid material with earth, when possible. <br />• Inside of a building, dilute acid or ferric sulfate liquid may be carefully flushed with water to the <br />building sump and routed to the Water Treatment Plant Sewndary Containment Tank. <br />Remediation: <br />• Evaluate situation. <br />• Do not add water. <br />• Absorb spilled material, when possible. <br />• Transport contaminated sons fo fhe Whirlw(nd Waste Dump storage area for temporary storage <br />until a permanent disposal site is determined. <br /> <br />Small Spill -Fire <br />Dilute or Concentrated Liquid Corrosives <br />PPE: Full-coverage acid suit; self-contained breathing apparatus (alternately full-face respirator with <br />combination cartridges for very small fires that can be quickly knocked down); face-shield; rubber <br />gloves; and rubber boots. <br />Response; <br />• Evaluate situation. <br />• Secure area. <br />• De-energize electrical equipment. <br />• Rescue & First Aid, if necessary & possible. <br />• For small fire use available dry-chemical fire extinguishers to knock down fire. Avoid water, if <br />possible. <br />• For a large fire, concentrate on protecting adjacent structures and slowly flood area with water from a <br />safe distance. <br />• Direct extinguishing agent in a manner to avoid splashing spBled material. <br />• Dam and dike at a safe distance to control runoff. <br />• Route collected runoff to fhe Untreated Water Storage Pond, when possible, or excavate a temporary <br />holding pond at a suitable locafion. <br />• Perform overhaul. <br />Remediation: <br />• Evaluate situation. <br />• Certify fire as extinguished. <br />• Absorb spilled materials, if possible, with earth or other suitable material. <br />• Transport contaminated soils to the Whirlwind Waste Dump storage area fortemporary storage until <br />an appropriate permanent disposal site is determined. <br />
