Page 2
Mr. Schmieding
November 9, 1979
c. Since most of the mined areas will be reclaimed as ponds there will
be little if any backfilling. The amount of land to be graded, top-
soiled and seeded will be approximately 59 acres.
d. As a result of on site review by a member of MLR staff, it has been
determined that 4" of topsoil should be sufficient to maintain re-
vegetation.
e. Water evaporation from ponds created by mining is not considered a
consumptive use and current plans are to not provide augmentation
for evaporative losses.
f. Per your recommendation, the reclamation plan will include cottonwood
and willow trees at 5 in a bunch 20 feet apart.
g. Per your recommendation, the seeding mixture will include tall
wheatgrass.
h. An average of 4 acres will be reclaimed each year.
Reclamation work will be completed after the final year of mining.
Maintenance of reclamation is expected to last an additional three
years.
3. Since a portion of the area to be left at the end of mining will be road-
way which is currently being used and the minimal amount of leveling
and topsoiling along the pond banks, the cost of reclamation per acre
would be something less than a totally revegetated area.
The cost of $500 may be somewhat low if mining costs are not included.
The operator would agree with increasing the cost to $1,000 per acre.
For the Empire Pit #77-534
1. Mining Plan
a. Topsoil has already been removed and is on site.
b. The slope of mining will not exceed 2:1.
' C. See notes on sheet 3 of 4, extraction plan map. The plan is
v expected to be as shown. At a later date when the final plans
will be submitted to the board as a technical change if necessar
in approximately thirty years.
