2.2.1 Buildings and Other Structures
A power line was constructed from the mouth of Munger Canyon to the mine site
in 1983. The power line roughly follows the access and haul road.
2.2.2 Access and Haul
Access to the Munger Canyon Mine is from Colorado State Highway 139
(Douglas Pass Road) as shown on Figure 1.1-2. The existing road is approximately
10,500 feet long, with 6,600 feet of the feature consisting of improvement to an existing
road along the canyon floor. The remainder was built along a hillside above and
adjacent to an ephemeral channel. Road related disturbance can be seen on Figure
2.2-1.
Road Design Considerations:
25 ton haul trucks Vehicle width = 8 feet
Maximum weight = 90,000 Ib Maximum wheel load = 7,000 Ib
Construction criteria:
Road widths - straights = 2.0 x width = 16 feet
curves = 2.5 x width = 20 feet
Berm height - radius of largest fire
Sub-base - 2.0 feet beyond finished width on both sides
surface top materials = 6" maximum depth
'/z" cross slope per foot on finished surface
Sub-base preparation of the existing road involved the use of a steel roller
applied following deposition of material in 8" lifts. Water was added during the
preparation work in an attempt to maintain optimum moisture content of 12 percent.
Pit run gravel and crushed gravel surfacing was applied to improve the road
surface. Fugitive dust suppression will be provided by watering during nonfreezing
weather when the road is in use. Fugitive dust controls are addressed in more detail
Permit Renewal 2-6 09/03
