• 5nowmass Coal Company proposes additional mining under North Thompson
Creek. This mining will consist of development entries. These areas
will be protected from subsidence by insuring that sufficient coal is
left in place to prevent subsidence.
Middle Thompson Creek
Middle Thompson Creek lies along the southern boundary of the No. 1 Mine
permit area. Middle Thompson Creek is a snow-melt stream. It is depen-
dent on the winter snow pack for much of its annual flow. Runoff from
storms also contributes to stream flow and accounts for peak flows dur-
ing the summer and fall months. A detailed description of the surface
hydrology is presented in the hydrology sections of this permit appllca-
tion (Sections 3.4.2.1 and 3.6.1.2).
Snowmass Coal Company proposes mining adJacent to Middle Thompson Creek.
The proposed mining consists of bleeder entries. These entries will be
designed to remain stable. These areas will be protected against subsi-
dence by insuring that sufficient coal is left to place to prevent sub-
sidence.
Sandstone Aquifers
The maJor aquifers 1n the permit and adJacent area are the Upper Send-
stone~ the Middle Sandstone and the Rollins Sandstone. A detailed des-
• cription of the ground water hydrology to the permit and adJacent area
is presented to Section 3.6.1 of the permit application.
10
