June 1996 Monthly Report/2nd Quarter Report
Page 3
Longfellow-Koehler Mine Waste Project
r
i~
A San Juan County Land Use Permit for this project was applied
for. This project was referred to the Historical. Review
Committee for determination of the work plan's impact to the
historical and cultural value of the site. The ::ite was
inspected by the Historical Review Committee and
recommendations were made to minimize impact to the site by 1)
capping the dumps in place, if possible and 2) avoid
disturbance to the Koehler buildings, jf ~ossibl~Y. The
significance of the site for its impact to water quality was
noted. Their recommendations will be discussed with the
Planning Commission for clarification during thE, appeal
process on the Gold Prince site.
This site will need a Section 404 permit to implement the work
plan. A site inspection is scheduled for July and the work
plan was submitted to the SHiI(! fos review as requirecl for 404
permitting. No significant",J~lppa~t to historical structures
was the determination on the?~bik plan by the ~SHPO. The San
Juan County Commissioners determined that the Koehler portal
could be reopened for discharge monitoring, oharacte~rization
and diversion without a Land Use Permit.
Monitoring samples were taken at this site and are in~~luded as
a DMR attachment to this report.
Pre-remediation site pictures are attached for this site.
London Mine Portals - Waste Dumps
This is a "B" list project and no work has been done to
implement the work plan.
Pride of the West Tailings
The project site was inspected by the U.S. Army Corp of
Engineers and it was determined that a Section~,404 F~ermit was
needed for this project. Due to the existence of a wetland
on-site, a wetland type delineation will also be required. An
access agreement has not been signed with the owner(:) of this
property.
Pre-remediation pictures are attached for this pro'_lect.
t
E
