Canada thistle has been observed at the Canadian Strip <br />operty directly south and upwind of the Kerr reclaimed areas. Borrow areas along <br />e county roads near the mine area contain Canada and Scotch thistle along with an <br />occasional musk thistle. Jackson County is actively spraying to control known weed <br />infestations (personal communication with Don Stinton, Jackson County Weed <br />Coordinatorl. Leafy spurge has also been identified in a few areas of Jackson County, <br />but not within or in proximity to the Kerr Mine and Tipple areas. <br />The primary noxious weeds identified in the Kerr Mine area are Canada and Scotch <br />thistle. Musk thistle was found in 1996. The plants were dug up by hand and <br />disposed of by burning. There has been no further recurrence to date. <br />Control Methods -The primary methods employed to control noxious weeds in the <br />Kerr Mine and Tipple areas consist of mechanical and chemical controls. Mechanical <br />methods include hand pulling or digging, and cutting at ground level. This method is <br />used primarily for controlling musk thistle. Once the musk thistle is removed, it is <br />disposed of by burning the entire plant, leaves, stem, and roots. Chemical control <br />includes selective spraying of weed infestations with one or more of the following <br />chemicals: <br />. • 2,4-D (various trade names) - A selective hormone-type herbicide for post- <br />emergent control of a variety of annual and perennial broadleaf weeds in <br />TR-19 780-83a Revised 11/98 <br />
