13
• tools) and no ground stone artifacts and does not appear to reflect activities related to the
procurement and initial processing of pinon nut and acorns. No further work is recommended.
SLA6967: SLA6967 was recorded in 1996 during field work for the surface mine area ofthe
Lorencito Canyon Mine (McKibbin et al. 1997). It is located within the area surveyed for the 001
and 007 sedimentation ponds. The site is located just south of and outside the bounds of
sedimentation pond 007 and may not be impacted. No new observations were made at this site in
1997.
SLA6967 was recommended to be not eligible for the National Register at the time of its
original recording. The site falls within the LCRHL and is recommended to benon-contributing to
the significance ofthe district. It includes few cultural materials (13 Flakes and four pieces of tested
material) and no ground stone artifacts and does not appear to retect activities related to the
procurement and initial processing of pinon nut and atoms. No further work is recommended.
SLA6968: This prehistoric site was recorded during inventory of the surface mine in 1996
(McKibbin et al. 1997). Because of the presence of a possible datable feature, the quantity and
diversity of artifacts present and the potential for intact subsurface remains, the site was left
unevaluated for the National Register and testing of the colluvial deposits was recommended.
The site lies along the realigned route of the P3 haul road and was tested during the 1997
• field season. Two shovel probes were excavated in the areas with the best deposition; no cultural
materials were recovered from either probe. Sub-surface soils were solid red clay, mantled by less
than one cm of aeolian sand.
Although testing revealed the lack of Holocene deposition on the site, the site falls within
the LCRHL and is recommended to be contributing to the significance of the district. This site has
ground stone and may reflect activities related to the procurement and initial processing of pinon nut
and acorns. The great number of flakes and the possible hearth feature indicate that this may be a
residential or base camp. However, because SLA6968 fal is within the P3 haul road corridor and had
been recommended for cultural resource clearance prior to the creation of the landscape (McKibbin
1997a), further field work is recommended only if it can be accomplished without delaying the
construction of the road (McKibbin 1997a:7).
SLA7112.14 and .IS (Colorado and Wvoming Railroad, Southern Division. Lorencito
Sidin :The Colorado and Wyoming Railroad was constructed in 1900- 1901 by the Colorado Fuel
and Iron Company to haul coal from mining towns west of Lorencito Canyon (Weston, Tercio, and
Cuatro) to the town of Jansen just west of Trinidad. The portion of the main line from Weston to
Tercio along the South Fork ofthe Purgatoire River was abandoned in 1951 and a new main line was
extended from Weston west along the Purgatoire River to the Allen mine. This new line between
Jansen and the Allen mine went out of service in 1996. The Lorencito Coal Company intends to
reopen a portion of this line from the Lorencito Canyon Mine to Jansen. The Colorado and
. Wyoming Railroad is currently recommended as eligible to the National Register because of its
association with significant events in Colorado's history, but the SHPO has yet to assess this
resource as a whole.
