l4
• SLA7112.14wasrecordedduringinventoryoftheproposedcoalloadoutpowerlinein 1997.
This 2400 foot long segment lies between two crossings of the Purgatoire River north of the mouth
of Lorencito Canyon. It does not include the bridges that span the river at either end, but does
include the Lorencito Canyon access road crossing and the proposed junction of the rail spur from
the load out facility for the Lorencito Canyon mine. The tracks for the Lorencito Siding have been
removed but the main line tracks are still in their original location. The rails and ties have been
replaced as part of routine maintenance and the Lorencito Canyon access road crossing probably has
been modified from its original construction. A few railroad spikes and tie plates are associated with
this segment of the railroad.
SLA71 12.14 is recommended as a contributing portion to the site's overall eligibility. The
modifications made to this segment are minor and have not negatively impacted the site's integrity
physically. Despite some modem developments in the area, the setting for the railroad is essentially
intact to the extent that it can convey the historic associations which make the resource eligible as
a whole.
SLA71 12.15 is a 1450 foot long segment lying within the inventory corridor for the P3 portal
power line. It extends between two intermittent drainage crossings but does not include the
crossings themselves but does include the crossing for Cow Canyon Road. This portion of the main
line remains as it was originally designed although the rails and ties have been replaced as part of
the routine maintenance. Cow Canyon road crossing may or may not date from historic period but
• it has certainly been upgraded since its original construction. A few railroad spikes and tie plates
are associated with this segment of the railroad.
SLA7l 12.15 is recommended as a contributing portion. It is little modified from its original
design and retains the necessary degree of physical integrity. While the setting of the resource has
been modified to some degree by modem developments, it is largely intact to the extent thaCit can
convey the significant historic associations that make the resource eligible as whole.
The proposed construction will not negatively impact the resource and no further work is
recommended at either SLA7112.14 or SLA71 12.15.
SLA7l8l: This prehistoric site was recorded in 1996 during inventory of the P3 haul road
(McKibbin et al. 1997). Because of the diversity of artifacts present, the presence of a potentially
datable hearth feature, and the potential for additional buried materials on some portions of the site,
it was not evaluated for National Register eligibility and avoidance was recommended.
A site visit during the 1997 field season, determined that the deposits on the northwest
portion of the site have the best potential to contain additional intact remains. Lorencito Mine
representatives determined that this portion of the site would lie well outside the potential area of
impact for the proposed haul road and would not be affected. The site falls within the LCRHL and
is considered a contributing to the significance of the district. This site has ground stone and may
• reflect activities related to the procurement and initial processing of pinon nut and acorns. The
diversity of artifacts and the possible hearth feature indicate that this may be a residential or base
camp. However, because SLA7l8l falls within the P3 haul road corridor and had been
