LJ
RECLAMATION PLAN
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
State Highway 133 Relocation
In 1983 the State of Colorado began relocating the highway known as
State Highway 133. As a result of the relocation of State Highway 133
the North Fork of the Gunnison River was also relocated. Both
relocation projects encroached on the Bear No. 1 and coal handling
facilities areas. This is shown on the Bear No. 1 and No. 2 Reclamation
Plan (Map 1).
Although all facilities and structures were removed from the coal
handling facilities area, this area is now under the responsibility of
the State Highway Department and indeed, much of this area now makes up
the road base far State Highway 133.
As the North Fork of the Gunnison River was relocated to the south,
approximately 2.05 acres of land once part of the Bear No. 1 permit area
became part of the river channel. This area also is the responsibility
of the State Highway Department.
West Elk Coal Company Mine Permit Boundary
In 1984, the West Elk Coal Company increased its mine permit boundary
onto what was formerly the Bear No. 1 Mine Facilities area. All
structures and facilities had been removed and the portals sealed prior
to this permit boundary increase.
In order to fix reclamation responsibilities in the area and at the
request of the Mined Land Reclamation Division (Division), (refer to
Exhibit 15, Mid-Term Review). The areas under the control of both West
Elk Coal Company and Bear Coal Company were surveyed. This survey is
• presented on the Bear No. 1 and No. 2 Reclamation Plan (Map 1).
-2-
