• y
Recommendation: As the body of the site is located north of the study
area, no further work is recommended unless the project area should extend north,
at which time the site should be avoided or tested.
5RT870 (MM 25641. This open lithic scatter (105 m x 85 m) is located on
the lower slope of a north-south trending ridge overlooking an unnamed
intermittent drainage 100 m to the south. The site is moderately disturbed by
a two-track which bisects the site. Artifacts include seventeen flakes, one core
fragment, and one Late Archaic projectile point. Flakes are dominated by
tertiary stage of reduction, followed by secondary and primary stage flakes.
Most flakes are of white chert, other materials include white chalcedony, grey
quartzite, and black chert. Many of the flakes show evidence of heat treatment
in the form of discoloration and crazing. The Late Archaic projectile point with
side-notches is made from white chalcedony which has been crudely flaked.
Evaluation: The roadcut which bisects the site demonstrates deposition of
at least one meter, therefore buried cultural deposits are likely. More data is
needed to assess the sites eligibility to the National Register.
Recommendation: Due to the potential for buried cultural deposits,
avoidance or testing is recommended.
5RT871 (MM 2565). This open lithic scatter (90 m x 145 m) is located on
a northeast-southwest trending ridge overlooking an intermittent drainage 200 m
• to the southwest. Site artifacts include twelve flakes and one utilized flake.
White chert is the most common material followed by white chalcedony and black
chert. Most of the flakes were secondary flakes, with fewer numbers of tertiary
and primary flakes. A two-track bisects the site and contributes to the heavy
erosion through the site. All artifacts were located in the eroded two-track,
indicating probable buried cultural deposits.
Evaluation: As all artifacts were located in the highly eroded two-track
and not on the natural surface, buried cultural deposits are likely. More
information is needed to assess the significance of this site and to evaluate its
eligibility to the National Register.
Recommendation: Due to the high potential for buried cultural materials,
avoidance or testing is recommended for this site.
Isolated Finds
Nine prehistoric isolated finds (5RT872-5RT880) were located within the
proposed Yoast Mine area. All isolated finds (IF) are one, two, or three
artifacts found within a very limited area. All isolated finds were not
considered significant or eligible for the National Register.
5RT872 (IF-1 ). This isolated find consists of two artifacts. One is a tan
quartzite biface fragment, while the other is a white chert thinning flake.
• 5RT873 (IF-21. This isolate is a single secondary flake of a slightly tan
white chert material.
