chalcedony, tan quartzite, and tan chert present. The fine-grained sandstone
mono has been pecked to shape and has one long-axis faceted working surface. The
Late Prehistoric projectile point of tan chert, is side-notched with a basal
notch.
Evaluation: Site is located on a natural vegetation island surrounded by
agricultural fields. The site boundaries lead-up to the agricultural disturbance
but not beyond, indicating portions of the site may have already been destroyed,
or could possibly exist intact: below the plow zone. Nearly all of the artifacts
discovered were found in highly rodent disturbed areas. Therefore, buried
cultural materials are likely. More data is needed to evaluate the sites'
eligibility to the National Register.
Recommendation: Due to the high potential for buried deposits, avoidance
or testing is recommended.
5RT868 (MM 25621. This open lithic scatter (60 m x 45 m) is located on a
floodplain of an unnamed intermittent drainage, within a plowed agricultural
field. Artifacts include 50+ flakes, one side scraper, one mono, and one biface
tip. Flakes from this sites consist mostly of tertiary flakes, followed by
secondary flakes. No primary flakes were identified. Dominant material is white
chert which is closely followed by translucent tan chalcedony. Other materials
present include tan banded chert, grey quartzite and, tan chert with large black
inclusions. The side scraper is made from tan translucent chalcedony with one
long-axis working edge. The fine-grained sandstone mono has been pecked to
shape. Two long-axis working surfaces are present, one pecked to roughen the
surface and one smooth, polished, non-pecked surface. The small, white biface
tip is lightly serrated on the edges.
Evaluation: Site is located on a deflated bench within a broad wash area.
All artifacts were located directly on the washout area, which contains no
deposition. Because of this lack of deposition, the site potential is clearly
demonstrated on the surface. This site is recommended to be not eligible for the
National Register.
Recommendation: No further work is needed.
5RT869 (MM 2563). This small open lithic scatter (18 m x 12 m) is located
on a north-south trending ridge overlooking an intermittent drainage to the west.
The site consists of sixteen flakes representing all stages of manufacture with
tertiary flakes being the most common. Grey quartzite is the dominant material,
fewer amounts of brown chert, tan chert, pink quartzite and dark brown banded
chert are also present. This site has a particularly good view in all
directions. Only a very small portion of this site (a single isolated flake) is
located within the project area, with the area of highest artifact concentration
located north of the project area.
•
'~ Evaluation: Although the site is small, the artifacts are relatively
dense, and a wide variety of materials are present. Small erosional gullies •
demonstrate that deposition of at least 30 centimeters exists within the site
borders and may contain buried cultural deposits. More data is needed to assess
the eligibility of this site to the National Register.
