IBIT H 41ILDLIFE INFORMATION
Commencing in June of 1974, Dr. 4Jilliam O. Wirtz conducted a wildlife ec-
ological survey on the property.
Reptiles were observed irregularly on all but winter trips. Their habitat
and seasonal distributions are to be found in Table 2.12 (8) 1.
` Birds were observed on all surveys and individuals were counted on each
trip.(See Table 2.12 (8) 2). After repeated sightings of both Prairie Falcons
and Peregrine Falcons a. highly trained observer spent 12 days on and around
this property and did not sight a single Prairie or Peregrine Falcon nor did
he locate any respective nesting sites.
Small mammal populations were censused at representative sites in each
habitate by use of Sherman live-traps and Tomahawk wire mesh traps. Large Tom-
ahawk traps were set for carnivores without success. Observation of carnivores
tracks, scats, and kills, however, provided information on these species. See
Table 2.12 (8) 3.
' Deer were counted and the age and sex were determined wherever possible.
Additional information on this species was obtained by observing tracks,
pellet groups, beds, trails, browse sign, shed antlers, and carcasses or skele-
tons. See Table 2.12 (8) 4.
Copies of all reports prepared for Occidental Oil Shale, Inc. by Dr.
4Jirtz are on file with this firm in Grand Junction and are available for State
and Federal officials inspection.
The general effect during the proposed operation on the existing wildlife
of the areas is expected to be minimal to moderate. Only 40 acres of surface
is expected to be disturbed on a property consisting of 4,360 acres. These
40 acres of surface are mainly a 30 acre dump and 10 acres of roads, drill pads
and storage area. The 30 acre dump is located in a dry box-canyon consisting. of
