Fuels the largest year-round employer in the county. This level of <br />employment remains steady throughcut the year and is not suhject to the <br />seasonal fluctuations that characterize the skiing and other recrea- <br />tional industries in the area. <br />Three Hundred Thirty-Eight (338) of the Company's employees are repre- <br />sented by the United Mine Workers of America under a forty-month collec- <br />tive bargaining agreement dated December 6, 1977. Energy Fuels enjoys a <br />good relationship with its local bargaining unit and was successful in <br />concluding its current contract without the loss of a single man-hour. <br />In addition, Energy Fuels has never, in its 17-year history, experienced <br />any of the wildcat strikes or walkouts that have been so prevalent in <br />the eastern United States. <br />Over 135 of the 465 employees, or 29%, have been residents of Routt <br />County for ten years or longer. They come from neighbcring farms, <br />ranches and communities to provide a stable and dedicated work force. <br /> Labor turnover is minimal and job applications constantly exceed the <br />• employed work force by at least 400%. <br />Energy Fuels is sensitive to the socioeconomic impacts that coal mining <br />has on the rural life of Routt County. Coal mining, farming and ranching <br />have been closely related since before the turn of the century. Today, <br />a large percentage of Energy Fuels' miners, as their grandfathers before <br />them, mine coal to supplement their incomes from farming and ranching <br />activities. <br />Taxes paid to Routt County for calendar year 1978 amounted to approxi- <br />mately $556,000. For the same year, production of coal from existing <br />Federal leases resulted in royalty payments of $537,046.06 to the <br />Federal Government. <br />Energy Fuels has recognized the need to train skilled personnel from <br />local manpower resources.
