r
DRILL HOLE ABANDONMENT
Three types of hole abandonment were used at Hart Syncline during
the 1985 exploration activities. All three types are in
compliance with FCEL C-40288, and are identical to the methods
used under the previous Federal Coal Exploration License C-36445
issued in July of 1983 for the Hart Syncline area.
Type 1: Shallow Holes (Drilled Within Stripping Limit)
A total of two (2) drill holes were drilled to depths of less
than 220 feet. In these two shallow holes, no artesian aquifers
were encountered. The holes were backfilled with as many
cuttings as possible and a surface plug of no less than five (5)
feet of cement was set. The excess cuttings were leveled and
dispersed evenly over the surface surrounding the hole. The
numbers and depths of the two drill holes abandoned in this
manner are:
040-85-10
040-85-1OC
220' total depth
206' total depth
Type 2: Abandonment Fluid Holes
A total of six holes were drilled to depths as great as 770
feet. The abandonment fluid was used in only the holes that
contained no artesian aquifers. The fluid used was Shur Gel,
which is a non-toxic bentonite based clay designed to seal drill
holes more effectively than cement. The abandonment fluid met
the following specifications:
1) 10-second API gel strength of at least 20 pounds per 100
square feet.
2) Filtrate volume not to exceed 13.Scc.
