r

Mr. Gilbert Rindahl -3- September 30, 1983
The staff recommends that the segregated topsoil from the Niwot
series and portions of the colluvial land nut be mixed with subsoil. ff
the operator wishes to screen the topsoil just prior to placement, he
may do so. The overburden subsoil must be stockpiled separately,
screened separately and replaced prior to topsoil replacement. In order
to achieve the proposed final land use, the staff recommends that a
minimum of 12 inches of "growth medium" be replaced evenly over all
disturbed areas.
3. The proposed seed mix containiny Smooth Brume, Orchardgrass and
Intermediate wheatgrass is acceptable for areas 'the operator wishes to
return to hay meadow. However, this mix would not provide proper plant
diversity or species for the upland disturbance areas and other areas
not to be hay meadow. The staff suggests that 'the operator propose
another seed mix for areas outside of the hay meadow.
the following species should do well on 'the upland areas:
Western wheatyrass
Little hluestem
Rig bluestem
Sldeoats grams
Blue grams
Green need legrass
Rubber rabbitbrush
Mountain mahogany
the operator should work up an
50 pure live seeds per square foot.
upland grass and shrub mix figured at
4. The operator has agreed to randomly plant Cottonwood, American plum,
Golden current, Chokecherry and Mountain mahogany seedlings adjacent to
the St. Vrain Creek for wildlife. However, I see no mention of 'this in
the revised plan. the staff recommends that this planned planting not
be deleted at this stage in the mining operation.
.~ , ~~~
~/~J.,/;
h ,; r
J'
5. The operator states that seeded areas will be irrigated for at least
the first complete growing season and, if needed, two years after
planting. Is it correct 'to assume that the operator is referring to all
areas, or just the hay meadow? What is the status of 'the irrigation
water the operator proposes to use?
6. Please state what slopes will be provided around the sediment ponds.
7. Vlease describe where the operator wishes to maintain the riprap
along the hanks of the St. Vrain Creek. Is it necessary to leave all of
the riprap, as is, to achieve 'the desired objective of land protection,
