e
ESPEY, HUSTON 6 ASSOCIATES, INC.
/ •
The major modification in soil characteristics in the topsoil and subsoil
will be the physical properties. Very fine sandy clay loam of the Shawn series will
be mixed with the silty clay loams of the other three series. Alteration will occur in
the blocky and columnaz structure.
13.5.3.1 Refuse Prepazation Prior to Topsoil Replacement
The refuse will consist predominantly of claystone material. This refuse
material will act, to a degree, like underlying bedrock and will typically not provide
plant growth medium for revegetation.
During construction of the refuse pile, the waste will be compacted to
approximately 85 percent of ASTM D6g8 maximum density. This compaction should
not effect water percolation or infiltration into the refuse pile from the replaced
subsoil and topsoil. This infilitration into the refuse material should prevent piping,
perching of soil moisture, and soil movement.
Refuse will be graded through the use of a bulldozer or equivalent
equipment for leveling the waste material. Regrading activities will be conducted
on the contour of the embankments to establish a pattern of surface roughness
features approximately.perpendiculaz to the slope of the refuse pile. These rough
surfaces will act to anchor the topsoil material.
13.5.3.2 Topsoil Replacement Operations
Topsoil replacement will be accomplished using rubber fire scrapper or
equivalent equipment that can safely operate in the azea. Topsoil will be replaced
when in a moderately dry condition only, in order to minimize clodding and
compaction. Inspections will be conducted periodically to ensure proper depth and
spoil density, 80-95 percent of ASTM D698 maximum density, aze attained. The
surface of the spoil layer will be left in a rough or furrowed condition along the
•
13-21a
