The underh ing material
is ~ ely gravelly IoamJ' sand that extends to a depth of
GO inches or more.
Permeability is nuulerate, and the acailaUle ++ater
capacity is moderate. F,eaction is neutral or mildly
alkaline. The effective rooting depth is ]2 to 20 inches.
Depth to the seasonal high ++'ater table is about 1 to
11;_ feet. The table is highest late in spring and in
summer.
'these soils are used for irrigated meadow, irrigated
crops, and range.
Reln•esentati+•e profile of Gerrard loam, 2,600 feet
south and 20 feet east of the north+cest corner sec. 25,
T. d0 N., R. 5 E.
Al]-0 to 5 inches; gray (lOYR 5/]) loam, eery dark gray
(lOS'P. 3/1) moist; strong fine granular s[ruclu re;
<oft, eery friable; 5 percent gravel; mildly alka-
line; clear snuoth boundary.
A14 5 to 14 inchrs; gray (]OYR 5/1) loam, eery dark gray
(]UYR 3/1) moist; common medium distinct mot-
tles, broom (i.5S'R 4/4) moist; +veak fine sub-
angular blocky structure parting to moderate
medium granular; hard, eery friable; neutral;
gradual +ca+)~ bounrlarp.
IIC19 to 6D ]aches; ver}' graven}' loamy sand.
The A hori zan is 1° l0 20 inches thick and is +'ery dark
gray and +'ery dark brown to black loam or light clay loam.
The content of gravel and cobbles above the IIC horizon
ranges from 3 to 15 percent.
n
LJ
CC-Crrrurd h,:~rn.
