,-
i
n+rrlc Series
The Norte series consists of moderately +vell drained
soils 24 to 40 inches deep Deer gravel and cmd. These
soils formed in gl.z+•elly alluvium on broad alluvial fans.
Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. Elevation is 7,500 to 8,300
feet. Natural +•egetatinn is dominantly blue grama,
]ndiun ricegrass, and low rabbitbrush, The average an-
nual precipitation is about 7 inches, the mean annual
air temperature is about 91° F, and the frost-free sea-
son is 00 to ]00 rlavs.
In a representative profile the surface layer and
underlying material to a depth of 30 inches are dark
gr;irisl] brown gravelly .candy loam. Pclou' this is very
+rravelly loamy sand that extends to a depth of GO
inches or more.
Permeability is moderately rapid, and the a+'ailable
+vater capacity is low m• moderate. F,eaction is mod-
erately alkaline. The effective rooting depth is 24 to 40
inches. The seasonal high +cater table is at a depth of
36 to GO inches.
These soils are used for irrigated crops and for
rvlge.
Representative profile of Norte gravelly sandy loam,
300 feet east and 2,-',]0 feet north of the southwest
corner sec. 18, T. 40 N., F.. 8 E.
.4p- 0 to ~t inches light Lrmcni ch gray (10]'R 6/2) gravelly
=and}' Inam, dark grayish broom (101-R 9/2)
moist; rand+a'ate fine granular structure; soft,
yr-ry friaLle; 75 prrrent gravel; ca lea rcous; mod-
rvratcly alkaline; ck•ar smooth houndai}'.
AC--4 to ]°_ inches; light Lrmynish gray (lOYR G/2)
gra+elly sand}' loam, dark grayish brown (70]'R
4 /2) moist; ++eak mrdium subanbntlar blocky struc-
ture; slightly hard, very friable; ?0 percent gravel;
calcareous; moderately alkaline; gradual +vavy
boundary.
C1-12 Lo 30 inches light bm,cnish gray (lOYR 0/2)
gravelly sandy loam, dark grayish hrou~n (]01'R
4/?) moist; massive; slightly' hard, eery' friaLle;
30 percrnL gra rel; scone discontinuous arrumu-
lations of visible Secondary ea rbm,ate as concre-
tions and coatings on gravel fragments; calcare-
ous; modPrafely alkaline; gradual +cayy Lnundary-.
11C2--30 to 60 inches; very gravelly ]Damp =and; gravel
and sand glee a grayish cast on esposu re; 50 to
80 percent grace] and cobhles.
The A horizon is gravelly sandy loam or sandy loam.
The content of grace] ranges from 5 to °_a percent in the
.4 and C horizons and from 15 to 35 percent in the C1
horizmt. Depth to the lIC hnriwn is 29 to 40 inches. This
horizon is eery gravelly loamy sand or sand that is 50 to
30 percent gravel and Bobbles.
No-\prte oracclly sandy loam. This nearly level
soil occupies the low end of broad alluvial fans, mainly
in the northeastern part of the Area, Slopes are 0 to
1 percent. The profile of this soil is the one described
as representative of the series. The Crater table is com-
monly at a depth of 3G to 60 inches and is highest in
summer. ]t is manipulated b>• a system of drains and
checks..4bout ?5 percent of this unit is included areas
of Quamon gravelly sandy loam, 10 percent areas of
Dunu] cobbly sandy loam, and 10 percent San Arcacio
sandy loam.
Runoff is slow. The soil blo+ring hazard is moderate.
This soil is used mostly for irrigated crops, chiefly
potatoes. Small grain, alfalfa, and vegetables are also
gro++-n. Some small areas are used for range. Capability
unit IIIs-2 irrigated, VIIs-7 nonirrigated; Dountain
Out++•ash range site.

Nr-Vortc•f)unul cnn, plrx. This unit is about 9(1 percent Norte
gravelly sandy loam and 40 percent Dunu] cobbly sandy
loam. ]n unleveled areas there are many small s+eales
:Ind ridges, The ridges are 1 to 2 feet higher than the
s+vales. Norte gravelly sandy loam and Dunul cobbly
sandy loam have the profiles describer] as representati~'e
of their respective series. About 20 percent of this trait
is included areas of Quamon gravelly sandy loam.
P.unoK is slow.
