<br />vation is 8,:,00 to 9,600 feet. Natural vegetation is
<br />dominantly +cestern nhcatgrass, ,junegrass, cun-ant,
<br />;md rnbbitbrush. The aeerage annual precipitation is
<br />about ]5 inches, the mean annual air temperature is
<br />about 40° F, ;tad the frost-free season is OS to 80 days.
<br />]n a representative profile the surface layer is very
<br />dark grayish bro+cn cobbly loam about 11 inches thick.
<br />The subsoil is d;n'k bro+an cobbly clay loam and cobbly
<br />sandy clay loam about .3] inches thick. The substratum
<br />is dark grayish brown cobbly sandy clay loam that
<br />extends to a depth of GO inches or more.
<br />Permeability is nx,deralely slow, and the acailable
<br />+eater capacity is high. Reaction ranges from mildly
<br />alkaline to moderately alkaline. The effective rooting
<br />depth is mm-e than GO inches.

<br />The .4 horizon is 7 to 15 inches Lhick. The B2t horizon is
<br />10 to 25 inches thick and is cobbly heavy clac loam or cob-
<br />bly clay. Above a depth of 90 inches, the content of rubbles
<br />and gravel ranges from 10 to 35 percent. The size and con-
<br />tent of coarse fragments generally increase belo+v 40 inches.
<br />The content of cobbles and stones in the C horizon ranges
<br />from 35 to 65 percent. Depth to lime ranges from 30 to 50
<br />inches.
<br />FrC-Fulcher cobbly' loam, 3 l0 10 percent slopes.
<br />This gently sloping or sloping soil occupies areas in
<br />narro+v momrtain valley's in the western part of the
<br />area. About 15 percent of this unit is included +'ert•
<br />cobbly and stony areas and cobble bars, 5 percent
<br />areas of Embargo very stony loam, and 5 percent
<br />Enlpedrado loam.
<br />Runoff is moderate. The hazard of +vater erosion is
<br />moderate. There are many small gullies and creek
<br />cha»nels.
<br />This soil is used for range and wildlife. Capability

<br />The Garita sclTes consists of deep, ++ell dr;rined soils.
<br />These•snils formed in alluvium on alluvial fans and
<br />foothills. Slopes are 1 Lo ?:i percent. F,levation is 7,700
<br />to 8,G00 feet. I~raturxl vegetation is dominantly +cinter-
<br />fat, blue grnma, ring muhly, rnbbitbrush, and snake-
<br />treed. The average annual precipitation is about 8
<br />inches, the mean annual air temperatm'e is about 41°
<br />F, and the frost-free season is 95 to 115 days.
<br />]n a representative profile the surface layer is dark
<br />grayish bro+an cobbly loam about 9 inches thick. The
<br />underlying material is light bro+cnish gray and grayish
<br />ln'o++'n gravelly loam that extends to a depth of 00
<br />inches or more.
<br />Permeability is moderate, and the acailable ~+'ater
<br />capacity is moderate m• high. P.enction is moderately
<br />alkaline. The effective rooting depth is more than 00
<br />inches.

<br />The A horizon is 5 to 1? inches thick and is loam or
<br />sandy loam that is cobbly or gracclly. The Cca horizon is
<br />gracclly or cobbly loam. The content of cobbles and gravel
<br />in [he A horizon ranges from 40 to 75 percent in fhe A hori-
<br />zon and from 35 to SS percent in the C horizon. Steeper
<br />soils generally have a larger amount of cobbles and gravel
<br />on the su eta re and in the profile than gently sloping =oils.
<br />Depth to the Cca horizon ranges from 5 to 30 inches. The
<br />content of calcium carbonate is 15 to 30 percent.

<br />'ibis very gently' sloping soil occupies the up)~er end
<br />of allucial fans along the ++estern edge of the valley.
<br />The profile of this soil is the one described as repre-
<br />sent:(tiye of the series. About 5 percent of this unit is
<br />included :wens of Stunner loam, I to 3 percent slopes,
<br />and about 10 percent areas of Luhon Loam, 1 to 3 per-
<br />cent slopes. Also included are some small areas of
<br />steeper Garita soils.
<br />Runoff is moderate. The erosion hazard is slight.
<br />?Host of the acreage is used for range, and a fe+e
<br />areas are used fm' irrigated alfalfa and small grain.
