<br />ping unit is about 50 percent Celestt~tremel}' stunt
<br />loam and 95 per(•ent Rock outcrop. ]t is mainly in
<br />mnuntninons areas. L] many small areas the slope
<br />ranges to ]00 percent. There are many narrow valleys
<br />:urd dr;tinage+rays. Gullies 3 to 8 feet deep and 3 to ]2
<br />feet wide have framed in most of the valleys. These
<br />gullies tarry runuft dm•inbr and after rains. Pock out-
<br />crop consists of exposures of bedrock and vertical cliffs
<br />and escarpments +vith ]0- to 70-foot drops. Blany large
<br />boulders are on Lhe slopes below the escarpments.
<br />lncduded e•ith this unit in mapping are small areas
<br />of Judcro loam in the narro+c valle)•s and small areas
<br />of a very shallow soil, less than 10 inches deep over
<br />bedrock, that is intermingled +rith the Pack outcrop.
<br />About 5 percent of this unit is included areas of Garita
<br />cubbl}' loam and Travelers very stm])• loam.
<br />Runoff is rapid. The hazard of +rater erosion is high.
<br />This nullq+ing unit is used fur range and ++'ildlife. It
<br />is an important habitat for deer. Capability unit \'IIs-1
<br />nonirrigated; Celeste soil in F.ocky Foothills range site;
<br />Rock outcrop not assigned to a range site.
<br />Derrick Series
<br />The Derrick series consists of well drained soils 10
<br />to 20 inches deep Deer grave] and cobbles. These soils
<br />fm med in cobbly alluvium on alluvial fans and ten aces.
<br />Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. Elevation is 7,600 to 8,200
<br />feet. ?`'atural vegetation is dominantly blue grama, ring
<br />muhly, sand dropseed, and ]ow rabbitbrush. The
<br />average annual precipitation is about 7 inches, the
<br />mean annual air temperature is about 41° F, and the
<br />frost-free seasm] is 90 to ]OS Bars.
<br />In a representative profile the surface lacer is dark
<br />gra)'ish bra.rn cobbly liiam about 4 inches thick. The
<br />subsoil is dark brown very gravelly clay loam or very
<br />gravelly loam about 13 inches thick. The substratum
<br />is gravel, cobbles, and sand that extend to a depth of
<br />CO inches or more.
<br />Fermeability is moderate, and the available water
<br />capacity is lo+v m' moderate. Reaction ranges from
<br />neutral to moderately alkaline. The effective rooting
<br />depth is l0 to 20 inches.
<br />These soils are used for range, irrigated crops, and
<br />wildlife.

<br />The Al horizon is 3 to 6 inches thick and is cobble loam
<br />to gravelly sandy loam. The B2t horizon is 4 to 12 inches
<br />thick and is ver}• cobbly clay loam in some pedons. The
<br />content of gravel and cobbles in [he A horizon ranges from
<br />35 l0 50 percent and from 35 to 70 percent in the B horizon.
<br />Depth to lime ranges from 8 to 30 inches.
<br />Dry-Dtrrirk r»Lhh• loam. This nearly level or eery
<br />gentl}• slopingoccupies :Qiuvial fans and terraces.
<br />Slopes arc 0 to rcent. About 15 percent of this unit
<br />is included :n'eas of Graypoint gravelly sandy loam and
<br />small :wens of Platoro loam and Dunul cobbly sandy
<br />loam.
<br />P.unoff is slo+v. The erosion hazard is slight.
<br />This soil is used mainly for range and +vildlife. Some
<br />small areas are used for irrigated crops. Capability

<br />Dunul Scrics
<br />The Dunul series consists of excessively drained
<br />soils 6 to ]0 inches deep over gravel, cobbles, and sand.
<br />These soils formed in cobbly alluvimn on alluvial fans.
<br />Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. Eleeation is 7,600 to 7,900
<br />feet. I~ratural vegetation is dominantly blue grama,
<br />Indian ricegrass, snake+veed, and low rabbitbrush. The
<br />average annual precipitation is about 7 inches, the
<br />mean annual air temperature is about 91° F, and the
<br />frost-free season is 90 to 105 days.
<br />In a representative profile the surface layer is dark
<br />grayish brown cobbly sandy loam about 10 inches thick.
<br />The underlying material is dark gray eery gravelly
<br />sand that extends to a depth of 60 inches or more.
<br />Permeability is rapid, and the available water
<br />capacity is lo+r. F.eaction is moderately alkaline. The
<br />effective rooting depth is 6 to ]2 inches.
<br />These soils are used for irrigated crops and for
<br />range.

<br />The A horizon is 4 to ]0 inches thick. It is ]rracellp sandy
<br />loam in some fields +vhere most of the cobbles have Lren
<br />removed by rockpicking machinery. The content of gravel
<br />and cobbles in the A horizon rangrs from 35 to .0 percent.
<br />The C horizon is eery gravelly sand ur very cobbly sand.
<br />Dn-Donut cobbly s:md)~ Ina m. This nearly level
<br />soil occupies large areas at the upper end of alluvial
<br />fans in the north-central part of the Area. Slopes are
<br />0 to 1 percent. About 20 percent of this unit is included
<br />areas of Quamon gracell)' sandy loam and 10 percent
<br />areas of Itm'te gracell} sandy loam.
<br />F.unoff is slow. The erosion hazard is slight.
<br />]f water is available, most of the acreage is used for
<br />irrigated potatoes, small grain, alfalfa, and vegetables.
<br />Some areas are used for range. Capability mlit 1'.'s-1
