Section 779.12 (b) Continued.
L
SJA 382
Consisting of a large open scatter of chipped stone tools and
flakes, this prehistoric site was located by MZAI 1n its 1980
survey. The fairly representative nature of the site, together
with the typical artifacts found there indicate that the site is in
no way distinctive or unique and thus would not appear to be eligi-
ble for the National Register. Appropriate site forms have been
filed with the Colorado State Archaeologist and the concurrence of
the SHPO regarding the character of the site must be obtained. In
any event, mining activity proximate to this site has reached its
greatest extent and the only potential impact upon the site would
occur in connection with the removal of an adjacent topsoil storage
pile. In order to minimize potential impacts, Kerr Coal will
assure that a qualified archaeologist supervises removal of this
topsoil pile. Following removal, the site will be isolated by
• fencing or other appropriate measures from mining impacts.
SJA 383
A single stone circle together with a light lithic scatter is the
evidence for this prehistoric site located during the 1980 MZAI
Survey. This site rests upon exposed bedrock and thus requires no
further excavation. Due to the exposed nature of this site the
surveying field crews were able to complete a good map of the site
as well as a thorough surface collection. The site is again a
fairly representative manifestation of a campsite and as such would
not appear to be eligible for the National Register. Appropriate
site forms have been submitted and consultation with the SHPO with
respect to this site must be obtained. As a consequence of the
nondistinctive nature of the site and the thorough data gathered by
the surveying group, additional mitigative measures are neither
warranted nor proposed. In any event, mining activity will not
destroy or adversely impact this site.
•
779-6
