eh ESPEY, HUSTON &ASSOCIATES, INC. <br />r~ <br />U <br />Geographic Setting: Mergel soils aze on upland hills and ridges. The <br />soils formed in alluvial fan or glacial sediments derived principally from <br />crystalline rock. At the type location the average annual precipitation is <br />18 inches with peak periods of precipitation occurring during the spring <br />and summer. The average annual temperature is 43°F, and the average <br />summer temperature is 60°F. The frost-free season is 70 to 90 days. <br />Associated Soils: These aze the Pazlin soils which have a clayey azgillic <br />horizon. <br />Drainage and Permeability: These soils aze well drained, with medium to <br />slow runoff and moderate permeability. <br />Use and Vegetation: These soils aze used principally as rangeland or for <br />recreational purposes. Principal native vegetation is native bluegrass, <br />• western wheatgrass, pine needlegrass and big sagebrush. <br />Distribution and Extent: The series is of moderate extent in high <br />mountain azeas of central Colorado. <br />Series Established: The series was established in Gunnison County, <br />Colorado in 1975. <br />3.1.9 Owen Creek Series <br />Owen Creek soils typically have very dazk grayish brown, very friable, <br />noncalcazeous A horizons; brown and yellowish brown, subangulaz blocky, <br />heavy silty clay loam and light silty clay B2t horizons; and very pale <br />brown moderately alkaline silty clay loam Cca horizons over shale and <br />interbedded sandstone at a depth of 36 inches. <br />• <br />I-23 <br />
