eh
ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.
u
gravel and cobblestones; visible secondary calcium cazbonate
occuring mostly as coatings on rock fragments; calcazeous;
moderately alkaline.
Type Location: These soils aze located approximately I mile south of
Doyleville in a gravel pit in the NW1/4 sec. 11, T.48N., R.3E, in Gunnison
County, Colorado.
Range in Chazacteristics: Thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from
7 to 15 inches, depth to calcareous material ranges from 0 to 12 inches.
Content of organic carbon ranges from 0.7 to 1.5 percent and decreases
uniformly with increasing depth. The soils aze 90 to 100 percent base
saturated. The control section is typically very gravelly loam or clay
loam, with the fine eazth fraction ranging in clay from 18 to 35 percent.
Rock fragments range from 35 to 80 percent and aze mostly gravel and
cobbles.
The Al horizon has hue of 2.SY or lOYR, value of 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3
moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. It is mildly or moderately alkaline. It may
be calcareous throughout but is leached in some areas. Usually the
horizon has a granulaz or crumb structure but it has weakly subangulaz
blocky structure in some pedons. Dry consistence is soft or slightly hazd.
The Cca horizon has hue of 2.SY or lOYR. Reaction ranges from pH 8.0
to 8.6, and calcium cazbonate equivalent ranges from approximately 4 to
12 percent.
Competing Series: These are the Abazca and Shrine series. Abarca soils
have sandy-skeletal material above depth of 40 inches. Shrine soils have
less than 35 percent rock fragments.
•
I-22
