eh
ESPEY, HUSTON & ASSOCIATES, INC.
•
concentrated visible secondazy calcium carbonate ranges from 7 to 36
inches. The 10- to 40-inch control section is usually heavy silty clay
loam or silty clay and has 35 to 50 percent clay, 20 to 50 percent silt and
10 to 35 percent sand with less than 15 percent being fine or coazser
sand. Rock fragments range from 0 to 15 percent by volume and with a
range in diameter from 1/8 to 10 inches.
The A horizon has hue of 5Y through 7.SYR, value of 5 through 7 dry, 3
through 6 moist, and chroma of 1 through 4. It ranges from mildly to
moderately alkaline. T'he C horizon has hue of SY through 7.SYR. It
ranges from moderately to strongly alkaline and has 3 to about 14
percent calcium cazbonate equivalent in the fine eazth fraction.
Competing Series: These are the Nobe, Rhoamett, Sunburst, and Vanda
series. Nobe, Rhoamett, Sunburst, and Vanda soils lack a paralithic
• contact at depths of less than 40 inches. Also, Nobe soils have more
than 15 percent exchangeable sodium in the control section. Rhoamett
soils lack a Cca horizon; Sunburst soils have more than 15 percent fine or
coarser sand in the fine eazth fraction; and Vanda soils have massive A
horizons that crust when dry.
Geographic Setting: The Dollard soils are oa gently sloping to steep
upland hills and ridges. The soils formed in fine textured parent material
weathered from underlying shale. At the type location the average
annual precipitation is 16 inches, and peak periods of precipitation occur
during the spring and summer. The mean annual air temperature is 41°F,
with a mean summer air temperature of 63°F. The mean annual soil
temperature is 45oF while the mean summer soil temperature is 62°F.
Associated Soils: These are the Belmeaz and Leaps soils. Belmear soils
have mollic epipedoas and lack continuous horizons of secondary calcium
C~
I-14
