Trash will not be allowed accumulate at this site. Covered trash r~ptacles will be located
neaz the office azea and periodically emptied, and trash removed from the site by the employees.
4.3 Erosion and Sediment Controls
The existing ground surface drains from the southeast to the west-northwest toward the site
access road and on downhill towazd the Lake Fork of the San Miguel River. There aze no
naturally occumng settling basins in this area. The existing ground in this azea has a porous
surface, and small storm events generally infiltrate into the ground, rather than n~nning off.
When mining is underway, most of the site will drain all stormwater runoff towazd the access
road. A small sediment erosion control ditch will be placed adjacent to the east side of the access
road to help control sediment carried by the stormwater runoff.
The access road into the site will be stabilized using water applications for the life of the mine
and until reclamation has been completed. The site access point will be paved with asphalt to
prevent carrying dirt and materials onto the highway.
Stockpiles of topsoil and overburden will be revegetated with a fast growing cover crop if they
are to remain in place longer than six months. Erosion control ditches will be cut at the base of
all stockpiles to prevent sediment from being released during storm events. See detail at the end
of this narrative.
Revegetation of disturbed areas remains the most efficient and economical Best Management
Practice (BMP) for reducing sediment transport from lazge areas. Roots hold soils in place and
surface growth filters sediment and reduces runoff velocities causing deposition of suspended
soil particles.
Reclamation and vegetating disturbed areas will be an ongoing process where practical, to reduce
soil erosion at the site. Revegetated azeas will be mulched following seeding to prevent erosion
prior to the establishment of the plants.
Mowing will provide the predominant form of weed control and appropriate chemicals will only
be used to control particularly hardy varieties of weeds. Any weed killers used must be
compatible with use neaz waterways. For example, Roundup should not be used neaz running
water.
4.4 Inspection and Maintenance
The site will be inspected to insure that all the BMPs aze functioning well and any off-site
dischazges have the best water quality attainable from good management practices. Little
dischazge, if any, is expected from this site. Any surface flows will be mitigated by the vegetated
azeas. Haul roads will be maintained in good condition.
A comprehensive inspection of the BMPs must be conducted no less than twice a yeaz, spring
and fall. A sample inspection form is included which may be modified as necessary. Note any
additional water quality protection procedures implemented directly on the report or bluelined
drawing for later incorporation to the S WMP. If unforeseen erosion occurs, the S WMP should
be revised as necessary to improve dischazged stormwater quality.
