• D.5.1 Leak Detection
The air pressure and flow rate into the well casing will be continuously
envestigated. If excessive air flows occur, the cause will be indicated.
In the unlikely event of a casing failure, production will cease, saltwater
will be removed from the well casing, and corrective measures will be
instituted to repair the leak. Corrective measures may include application
of a spray sealant to the interior of the pipe or, if necessary, the
installation and cementing of an inner sleeve casing.
In addition to air pressure and flow monitoring, water flow will be
monitored in both the injection and recovery wells to permit calculation of
a water balance. The water balance will consider water injected, water that
occupies the volume of dissolved nahcolite, minor amounts of water that
permeates the Boies Bed, and water flow recovered from the well. The water
balance may prove to be an inprecise measure of leakage, however, mainly
because the rate of water permeation into the Boies Bed is yet unknown and
• may vary with time.
D.5.2 Monitoring Wells
A third means of leak detection involves continuous monitoring of the
piezometric head in i:he three monitoring wells shown on Figure D-1. Any
leaks that breech between the production zone and the overlying aquifer
would be apparent by sudden and substantial level fluctuations (as opposed
to seasonal fluctuations). Water quality monitoring will also provide an
additional indication of leakage. Water quality samples will be obtained on
a monthly basis. Any effects on the lower aquifer will be immediately
reported to the MLRD, and the water sampling frequency will be increased to
once per week.
The monitor wells, rei~erred to above, will be rotary drilled to a depth of
approximately 1,715 feet. A 4 1/2- to 5 1/2-inch diameter casing will be
installed and cemented. After the casing is installed, the hole will be
. rotary drilled an additional 50 feet, and left open for ground water
monitoring. The well. will be equipped with continuous graphic water level
monitoring instrumentation.
D-13
