• Buildings and equipment to support law enforcement are also needed. The
Delta County Jail has the capacity to handle 23 inmates; currently, plans
are under consideration to construct a facility to accommodate 52-85
people. The strain on law enforcement personnel would be reduced if a
holding facility existed in the eastern portion of the County. Currently,
deputies need to transport nrreetees to Delta; thus a holding facility
could minimize the transport time by permitting the scheduling of 1-2
trips per day from the holding facility to the County Jail. Another
alternative considered to relieve this strain ie the addition of a
'floating" deputy whose responsibility would be to respond to each town on
nn ae-needed basis to transfer prisoners.
7. Education
Delta County contains six elementary schools, two junior high and four
high schools. Gunnison County students in the Somerset area, by
• agreement, attend Paonia schools. in the spring of 1979 voters approved a
S13 million bond issue that will replace six schools - all high schools in
the County and the elementary schools in Paonia and Crawford. The new
buildings will not add capacity; however, the architectural design will
permit additions.
Vocational education is provided by the new (1976) Delta-Montrose Area
Vocational-Technical School. In 1978, 15,647 student training hours in
mine safety and health and in miner skill training were offered in support
of the County's coal industry (A Summary of Mineral Industry Activities in
Colorado, 1978, Part I, p.9). Recently, a Mine Tralninq Center in the
Hotchkiss area has been funded to provide initial and upgrade training for
the mining industry.
B. Health Care
Delta County Memorial Hospitnl, located in the city of Delta, was
constructed in 1974 and has a current complement of 32 beds. In March,
• 1980, this facility was approved for an expansion of 12 beds, with 4
shelled beds. Construction began in January of 1961, with anticipated
24
