' Western Slope Carbon, Inc. Page 3
December 15, 1981
undisturbed and disturbed (bulk) samples of the site
' materials for laboratory testing. A monitoring well
was to be installed in one or two test holes and water
' samples were to be collected for full environmental
testing.
' 4. Based on the above developed data, evaluate the
stability of the existing embankment under both
' static and pseudo-static (seismic) conditions.
5. Evaluate the potential for leachate generation and
' seepage, and consequent environmental damage.
6. Recommend appropriate grading criteria for embankment
' stabilization, continued GOB placement and compaction,
and construction of perimeter surface water diversion
' ditches.
7. Prepare a report summarizing the results of our in-
vestigation and recommendations for continued operation
of the disposal site.
' SERVICES PERFORMED
' One of our engineering geologists reviewed available pertinent publications
and examined the disposal site and vicinity. He then positioned and logged
five, hollow-stem, auger borings up to 27 feet deep. The borings were drilled
with truck-mounted equipment at the locations shown on the Plot Plan. Twenty-
' five undisturbed drive samples were attempted, using a 140 lb. drop hammer.
Twenty-three undisturbed samples, one grab sample, and two bulk samples of
the materials encountered were obtained for laboratory testing. Slotted
plastic pipe was inserted in Borings 2 and 5 for subsequent groundwater/leachate
measuring and sampling. Additional bulk samples were obtained of the coal process
' waste (GOB) presently being hauled to the site and of the native surface topsoil.
Subsurface materials encountered in the borings are described on Plates 3A
' through 3C, Boring Logs (preliminary). The system used to describe the materials
encountered is explained on Plate 4, Method of Soil Classification, and Plate 5,
