Western Slope Carbon, Inc.
December 15, 1981
Page 4
Description of Rock Properties. The Boring Logs show subsurface conditions
' at the locations and on the dates indicated, and it is not warranted that
they are representative of subsurface conditions at other locations and/or
t times.
LABORATORY TEST DATA
All of the undisturbed samples were tested for moisture content and dry
' density. Five undisturbed samples were tested for direct shear strength
at natural moisture contents and at various surcharge pressures (for de-
' termining soil engineering strength parameters). Six undisturbed samples
were tested for direct shear strength at artificially increased (saturated)
moisture conditions and at various surcharge pressures. One plasticity index
' test (Aterberg Limits) was performed. Three grain size analyses and two com-
paction tests were performed on bulk and undisturbed samples. The results
of the foregoing tests are portrayed on the Boring Logs, and on Plate 7,
Grain Size Test Data.
' Three permeability tests and one consolidation test are presently being per-
' formed on undisturbed samples. These tests are quite time consuming and are
therefore not available at the time of publication of this report.
' Bulk samples of the GOB and of the topsoil were tested for major constituents
and chemical properties sensitive to EPA regulatory requirements; these test
' results are presented on Tables 1 and 2. Two water samples from Borings 4 and
5 were also similarly tested; the results of these tests are presented in
' Table 3. Table 4 presents the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended
maximum contaminant levels for water.
GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS
GENERAL
Our interpretation of the site geotechnical conditions are presented below
and are based on the literature review, geologic reconnaissance, subsurface
exploration, and engineering analyses described above.
