Section 780.211b) Continued.
Monitoring and sampling of the surface water stations shown on Map 23-2, Water
Monitoring Sites contained in Exhibit 42, Drainage and Sediment Control Plan, Map
16a, Kerr Mine Area Surface Water Hydrology; and Map 17a, Kerr Tipple Area
Hydrology, will be conducted on fle b chedule appropriate for runoff conditions.
Surface water monitoring sites are divided into three categories: Surface Discharge
Points; Selected Surface Stations; and Sample Sites. Surface discharge points include
all sediment pond discharges and the irrigation ditch adjacent to the loadout. Selected
surface stations monitor inflow to and outflow from the Kerr Mine Area along
ephemeral drainages, and also include one pit water site. Sample sites include surface
water sample locations adjacent to the loadout.
All surface water sites are monitored weekly during March through June and monthly
during July through October. Samples are collected at each site during each visit
when water is present and analyzed for the constituents shown on Table 61, Kerr
• Mine Area Hydrologic Monitoring Schedule. At the time samples are collected, pH,
electrical conductivity, and temperature are measured and recorded as field
parameters.
At Surface Discharge Points and Selected Surface Stations, flow is also measured or
estimated lexcept at the pit water site). V-notch wiers, Cipoletti wiers, H-flumes or
other approved measuring devices are used to measure flow at surface discharge
points and some selected surface stations. Where no measuring devices are present,
flow is estimated. The typical construction of V-notch and Cipoletti wiers is illustrated
by Figure 21, Kerr Monitor Wier Design.
Sedimentation ponds are monitored for sediment level and water level on a quarterly
basis except during winter. Each sedimentation pond has a staff gauge installed for
monitoring of water and sediment levels.
Since mining has ceased, pits have been backfilled, and the majority of disturbed areas
have been regraded and revegetated, Kerr proposes to reduce the number of sites to
be monitored. The current monitoring sites are shown on Map 23-2, Water Monitoring
Sites contained in Exhibit 42, Drainage and Sediment Control Plan. Following is a list
of sites proposed for elimination:
TR-19 780-109 Revised 11/98
