. Section 780.21(b) Continued.
2. Reduction in the current number of ground water sites to be monitored. See Map
48, Mine Area Monitoring Stations, and Map 36, Kerr Tipple Area Postmining
Topography, for the locations of the ground water monitoring sites to remain in
the monitoring program.
Water quality information has been collected since the 1979/80-baseline period,
Kerr submits that further data collection from un-disturbed, non-impacted, or
peripheral areas are unwarranted. The majority of the disturbed area at the mine
site has been regraded and revegetated for at least two years, with only the
proposed permanent light-use roads and the surface facilities area remaining
unreclaimed (see the 1997 Annual Reclamation Report for details of the current
reclamationl. Since mining has ceased, pits have been backfilled, and the majority
of disturbance areas regraded and revegetated, Kerr proposes to reduce the
number of sites to be monitored. The current monitoring sites are shown on Map
23-2, Water Monitoring Sites, contained in Exhihit 42. Following is a list of
ground water wells proposed for elimination from the monitoring program.
1. Well 79-1 -This well is located at the north end of the 720 Pit near the
proposed site of spoil Well 99-1. Well 79-1 was installed in the Sudduth
Seam overburden to monitor potential impacts from mining. Mining in this
area was completed in 1983, so this well is no longer needed.
2. Well 79-2 -Well 79-2 was installed in the Sudduth Seam overburden at the
south end of the 720 Pit to monitor potential impacts from mining. Similar to
Well 79-1, this well is no longer needed.
3. Well 79-3 -This well, installed in the Sudduth Seam overburden and located
between the 720 Pit and Pit 1, has been monitored for water levels only.
4. Well 79-61 - WeH 79-61 was installed north of Pit 1 in the Sudduth Seam to
establish baseline/background data for the coal aquifer in the Kerr North area.
This data was collected in support of future mining which will now not occur.
5. AP-3 -This well, located at the southwest corner of the loadout, has been
monitored for water levels only.
TR-19 780-tOBb Revised August 1999
