APPENDIX A
MAPPING UNIT DESCRIPTIONS
• ROCK OUTCROP (RO)
Outcrops of geologic strata on which no soil has formed.
DISTURBED LANDS (DL)
Land which has been disrupted by removal, burial or mixing to the point
were it does not function as a soil.
STONELAND, BASALT (5)
Land where stones larger than 5 inches in diameter makeup greater than
90 percent of the soil volume.
SARATON STONEY LOAM (2)
This mapping unit is made up of 95 percent Saraton stoney loam, less
than 5 percent sandstone outcrop and less than 5 percent Delson stoney loam.
The Delson stoney loam occurs as an inclusion in isolated, small areas where
the slopes have slumped and created a flatter slope so deeper soil could
develop. The Saraton stoney loam is consistently shallow on steep slopes
greater than 60 percent and has between 20 and 60 percent basalt boulders in
the profile.
• RAZOR STONEY CLAY (3)
This mapping unit is made up of 90 percent Razor stoney clay with less
than 5 percent Delson stoney loam and 5 percent shale outcrop, each. The
Razor stoney clay is covered on the surface with basalt boulders and the
profile reflects the influence of the basalt. The profiles are consistently
deep with few racks in the profile.
SARATON-BEENOM COMPLEX (4)
Thi s mapping uni t i s made up of 30 percent Saraton soi 1 and i s on the
upper parts of slopes in steeper areas. The Beenom soil makes up about 70
percent and is in the lower slope positions and in small valleys. Sandstone
and shale outcrops are associated with these soils and the Beenom soils are
strongly influenced by these parent materials. The profiles are consistently
shallow with sandstone channery.
DELSON DEEP AND DELSON YERY DEEP (1)
This mapping unit is made up of 65 percent Delson deep soil and 30
percent Delson very deep soil with less than 5 percent inclusions of both
Saraton stoney loam and Razor stoney clay. The Delson very deep soil occurs
on the flat portions of old slides and slumps. Basalt boulders are common on
the surface but make up less than 10 percent by volume of the soil profile.
•
6
