J6
"...deep, somewhat poorly drained soils with clay loam surface layers and
loam or clay loam underlying layers. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. The soils
are moderately permeable, runoff is slow and erosion hazard is slight.
Available water-holding capacity for the profile is 10 to 12 inches.
Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more except where there is a
seasonal high water table at 2.5 to 5 feet."
"This land is used for irrigated crops and pasture."
"...salt tolerant crops such as barley and sugar beets do well.
Irrigated pasture will be productive on this land. Commercial fertilizers
generally will not pay unless it is drained...avoid over irrigation.
Frequent, light irrigations will help keep the salt accumulations down."
"Salt ar,d water tolerant species of grass should be used if this .land
is seeded to pasture."2
Soil 28-B is Nederland very cobbly sandy loam. This is a moderately
deep, well drained, poorly developed soil. The surface sail is moderately
light textured. This soil is underlain by rock and cobble at 20" to 40"
and has enou,h cobble and rock throughout to prevent cultivation. Water
intake rate is medium. Water holding capacity is medium. It belongs
to soil capability unit VII sl which is described as foll~~ws:2
"...shallow to deep, well drained soils with stony, ~~obbly or very
gravelly loam sand, sandy loam or clay loam surface layers. The subsoils
are sandy clay loam or clay. Slopes are 5 to 55 percent. Precipitation is
12 to 24 inches, and the frost free season is 80 to 155 d,sys. The
soils are slowly to rapidly permeable, runoff is slow to rapid,
2U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Unpublished manuscript st Longmont,
Colorado Office.
