J4

• Soil 12-B. Sandy loam, 0 to 3 percent slope. A deep, somewhat ~~oorly
drained soil with a light textured surface soil and a moderately light
textured, poorly developed subso9l. 4Jater intake is moderately rapid
(2 to 6 inches per hour). Water holding capacity is moderately glow.
Soil 12-B belongs to capability class III e8. Class III soil~c have
severe limitations that reduces choice of plants, require careful manage-
ment, or both. The letter "e" indicates that the severe limitation is
attributed primarily to erosion hazards. Capability unit III a-I. is des-
cribed as follows.2
"...deep, well drained soils with sandy loam surface layers ar~d subsoils
or underlying layers of sandy loam, sandy clay loam or clay. Slopes 'are
0 to 3 percent. Precipitation is 12 to 18 inches and the frost-free season
is 140 to 155 days. The soils are rapidly to slowly permeable, runoff is
slow to medium and erosion hazard is moderate to severe. Available water
holding capacity for the profile is 5 to 11 inches. Effective rooting
depth is 6 inches or more."
"The land is used mainly for dry cropland, although a few areas (including
the Jenkins tract - G.L.H.) are pasture. Wheat is the main crop."
"This land is suited to all dryland uses and all adapted craps and
grasses. A summer fallow system of farming is necessary for good yields...
crested wheat, pubescent wheat, intermediate wheat and Russian tiild rye are
good grasses."
Soil .16-A. McClave clay loam, level, A deep, somewhat poorly dr~3ined
soil with a moderately heavy to medium textured surface soil. The sub-
soil is moderately heavy textured, and poorly developed. Water intake
. rate is moderately slow (0.2 to 0.6 inches per hour). 4later holding
capacity is high. Irrigation management is important. Capability Unit II
sw 1 when irrigated. Capability Unit II say is described as follows:
U.S. Soil Conservation Service.. Unpublished manuscript at Longmont,
Colorado office.
