J7

,, and erosion hazard is slight to severe. Available water-holding capacity
for the profile is 0.5 to 8.5 ides. Effective rooting depth is 10 to
40 inches or more.
"This land is used for range, woodland and wildlife."
"These soils are well suited for permanent vegetation. Reseeding is
difficult if not impossible because of stones and cobble.3 Good range
management will increase the proportion of desirable plants and also improve
yield of forage. Using one-half the year's growth is a good practice. Some
of the better grasses for this land are the bluestems, needlegras:ses.
and sideoats grams."
Soil 29-B. Stony sandy loam, similar to 28-B. "This is a shallow,
well drained, poorly developed soil with a moderately light textured surface
and subsoil. There is a high percentage of rock and cobble throu~lhout.
Water intake rate is rapid. Water holding capacity is low".2 Capability
Unit, dry, is VII sl, the same as for soil 28-B.
All soils in the lease area are used for pasture. It is estimated by
the Soil Conservation Service that they will produce about 500 to 600 pounds
of air dry forage annually of which 250 to 300 pounds should be available to
cattle.
Water
The area contains both surface and underground water. Surface water is
represented by Coal Creek and some apparent stock ponds. The stock ponds
can be ignored.
Coal Creek crosses the northern part of the lease area in a ~;outhwest
to northeast direction, Figure J-1.
3Stony soils can be reseeded by hand.
