- l01 -
' In order to evaluate revegetation success at the Sun-
light Mine surrounding undisturbed vegetation will be sam-
pled. Since the disturbed area is less than forty acres,
this data will be used as the success standard. To obtain
' informative information which can be used to define the
' baseline conditions for cover, productivity and woody species
density, the vegetation must be sampled during the most ap-
' propriate segment of the growing season. Sampling which oc-
curs during other times of the year will not give meaningful
' information, and can lead to underestimating cover, produc-
t lion and species composition. Random sampling of the vegeta-
lion is required because of the statistical demonstrations
' required in the performance standards evaluating revegetation
success. By using a random design, an unbiased estimate of
' the mean and variance of the vegetation characteristics mea-
' sured can be obtained.
The other aspect which must be addressed is the acquisi-
' lion of an adequate sample for cover, production and woody spe-
cies density in order to ma ke the required statistical compari-
' sons. The Snedecor-Cochren sample adequacy equation (Snedecor
' and Cochren, 1967) will be used to demonstrate sample adequacy.
The vegetation communities occurring at the site are of the
' woody type and therefore enough samples will be taken to detect
a ten percent reduction in the mean with eighty percent confidence.
' These statistical constraints will be applied to herbaceous cover
' and production, and woody species density.
LJ
