i ,: -

One of the parameters to be measured is cover and this
will be done by using the l ine intercept method. This method
t was chosen b ecause it is a technique that is used in cover
studies done in grasslands, shrubland and forests. The sam-
1
pling method used should be conducive to sampling in both com-
' munities and, it is apparent that the line intercept method
satisfies this r equirement.
t Preliminary sampling will involve obtaining cover data
from twenty tran sects. The transects will be randomly located
i
id
b f
h
l Th
id
b
l
d
ng a gr
y us ay o
t
e area to
over e samp
e
e gr
.
lines will be .5 inches apart and a nu mber will be assigned to
the intersection of the coordinates. A random number table
' will be used to determine the starting point for each of the
transects. After the starting point is selected, a number be-
' 0-360
ill b l
d
l
t
d dir
tion
d
i
th
t
t
w
tween
e y se
ran
om
ec
e o
e
erm
ne
e
ec
' in which the transec t will be laid ou t. The transect will be
15 meters in length and the portion o f the transect intercepted
' by each species will be recorded and used to develop the percent
cover for herbaceous vegetation; bare ground and litter will al-
'
so be recorded.
' Once the preliminary cover information is obtained from
the twenty transects a mean and variance for the characteristic
' will be calculated. This information will be used in the Snedecor-
Cochren equation to determine if an adequate number of samples
have been taken. The equation is as follows:
