MININ6 PLAN <br />likely that the soil depth of the Manuel soil is more uniform than is found in <br />. the (ra5C2<j0, but some variations, particularly as they relate to slope and <br />aspect <the direction a slope faces), can be expected. <br />The Stoneham loam soil (identified by its fine texture, general lack of <br />gravel particles, and location on tap of the gravel deposit in the west <br />central portion of the site) will be salvaged to a depth of 8" to SO". Like <br />the Manuel, this soil exhibits good depth, excellent quality, and is easily <br />distinguished from the Casca,jo soils. Below about 10." the quality declines <br />with increasing clay content and increasing alkalinity and salinity. Same <br />variations in the depth of salvage can be expected where the Stoneham soil <br />blends into the Cascajo soils. In those areas it may be feasible to salvage <br />only about 4" to 8" of topsoil. here this blending occurs the topsoil is <br />expected to be much thinner and to exhibit sore of the characteristics of the <br />Casca,io soil. Over most of the area occupied by the Stoneham loam and its <br />Cascajo blend the 8" to 10".depth should be able to be met. <br />Areas of the Baca clay loam should not need to be disturbed as they are <br />well away fran the gravel deposit in the northeast corner of the site. <br />• WATER DIVERSIaVS: No permanent streams exist on or cross the property. A <br />few shallow 5wales are shown on the topographic map, but these only carry <br />water after unusually heavy thunderstorms. Because the land is generally <br />quite flat, runoff and gully erosion has not been a problem, even though the <br />existing vegetatim provides only moderate protection against erosion. <br />Because the gravel deposit to be extracted exists on top of or very near <br />the tap of the low, rolling hills no water diversions are necessary. Drainage <br />control from disturbed land will be easily accomplished through the use of low <br />berms along the edge of the mining areas where they meet ad,iacent undisturbed <br />land. These berms can slow runoff from the mined land and also gather what <br />little silt that could be carried in the low velocity flows. Runoff and <br />ad,)acent erosional problems have not been a problem at the Chantala Pit <br />operated by the same company since the early 1970's. This site and that site <br />are structurally similar. Therefore, the operator has a considerable amount <br />of experience in controlling drainage and erosion from sites like this me. <br />r~ <br />Page 8 <br />
