Colorado," states on page 41 that the frost-free period in Walden
is only 46 days, extending from mid-June to early August. With
reference to growth of native vegetation, Smith concluded that some
plants start growth in early May and generally produce seed and go
dormant by the end of June or early July. Smith concludes that
after this period, growth of certain plants may then resume until
late August or September. He said that still other species start
growth in early June through August. The probability of success-
fully revegetating reclaimed sites is highly dependent on available
moisture. In the Steamboat Springs - Hayden, Colorado area, Energy
Fuels has successfully revegetated coal slip-mined land. A comps
rison of the precipitation that occurs at Walden to the Steamboat
Springs - Hayden area was made for the growing season months of
May - September.
