•
Section 779.19 (b) Continued.
Revised 11/20/80
bably somewhere between the reported precipitation for Hayden and
Steamboat Springs; and precipitation at the Kerr Mine Area is
probably somewhat greater than that reported at Walden weather
station. E.L. Smith (cited above) wrote that "precipitation seems
to increase rather markedly from north to south... and to some
extent from west to east...".
The similarity between Walden and Hayden-Steamboat Springs' growing
season precipitation is a good indication that revegetation at the
Kerr Mine Area can be successful.
Further evidence of successful revegetation is found in "Colorado
Plant Materials Field Planting Trials, 10-year Summary 1965-1975,"
SCS, Box 17107, Denver, Colorado. In species trials in Colemont,
southwest of Walden, performance of four species were rated ex-

cellent after four years. They are pubescent wheatgrass, bluebunch
wheat, crested wheatgrass, and sheep fescue. Siberian wheatgrass,
beardless wheatgrass, intermediate wheatgrass, pubescent wheatgrass
were rated as good. These grasses were planted on a valley bench
range site and were grazed by cattle the second and third years
after seeding.
In 1980, oil well drill pads in the immediate vicinity of the Kerr
Mine Area were studied by Kerr Coal personnel to determine the rate
of reestablishment and relative abundance of plants growing on
these sites at various time periods after disturbance. Drill pads
constructed after 1973 were reseeded with a mixture of 6 pounds of
western wheatgrass and 2 pounds of yellow sweetclover or 2 ponds of
annual ryegrass. Preliminary results for some of the 1974 and 1978
data is found in Table 27, Summary for Revegetated Drill Pads, of
the Kerr Coal permit application. Additional drill pads have been
sampled and the results given below.

779-77 cc
