Section 779.19(b) Continued.
•
Revised 11/20/80
centage of cover varied from 16% to 33%, Considering the fact that
these sites were not re-topsoiled, received a minimum of seedbed
preparation, and were seeded with a grass that develops an open
stand that resists reinvasion of other plant species, these data
support the contention that a permanent and diverse plant community
can be established in the Kerr General Area where topsoil is re-
applied, a seedbed is prepared, and a diverse mixture of adapted
grasses, forbs, and shrubs is planted. Establishment of these
plants will be enhanced by the favorable summer precipitation which
amounts to 61% of the average annual precipitation.
Concern has been expressed over the revegetation potential at the
Kerr Mine Area. This concern is based on the relatively short
growing season and the low precipitation in the Kerr General Area.
In addition to the information presented in Section 780.18, Recla-
oration Plan, the following studies supporting revegetation feasi-
bility in North Park are submitted for consideration.
Summer season, (i.e., the growing season for cool season plant
species) is defined for purposes of this Section of the permit
application as the months of May, June, July, August and September.
Precipitation average for these months is 61 percent of the total
annual precipitation of 9.9 inches in the area. This information
is based on the Walden, Colorado, weather station data for the 19
year period of 1951-1970. These figures can be checked by re-
ference to Table 15, Walden, Colorado, Average Monthly Precipita-
tion.
E.L. Smith in his Ph. D. dissertation, submitted in December, 1966
at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, titled "Soil-
Vegetation Relationships of Some Artemisia Types in North Park,
~J
779-77 as
