Over irrigation results in a higher water <br />table and the production of only water tolerant plants. <br />If this unit is used for nonirrigated crops, the main limitations are <br />wetness, clayey texture and short growing season. Wetness limits the choice <br />of period for planting and harvesting. Because of the clayey texture, tillage <br />operations should be done when the soil is at the proper moisture content. <br />If this unit is used for homesite development, the main limitations are <br />the high water table, very slow permeability and shrink-swell potential. <br />Septic tank absorption fields do not function properly because of the high <br />water table and very slow permeability. Use of sandy backfill for the trench <br />and long absorption lines helps to compensate for the very slow permeability. <br />If buildings are constructed on this soil, properly designing foundations and <br />footings and diverting runoff away from buildings help to prevent structural <br />• damage because of shrinking and swelling. The effects of shrinking and <br />swelling can be minimized by using proper engineering designs and by backfill- <br />ing with material that has low shrink-swell potential. <br />This map unit is in capability subclass Vw. <br />27A--Unnamed sandy loam, 1 to 10 percent slopes. This deep, well <br />drained soil is in narrow alluvial valleys. It formed in alluvium. Elevation <br />is 7,000 to 8,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is about 18 to <br />25 inches, the average annual air temperature is 37 to 40 degrees F, and the <br />frost-free season is 40 to 60 days. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of a soil similar to this Unnamed <br />soil but is cobbly or stony. <br />Typically, the surface layer is a very dark grayish brown sandy loam <br />about 14 inches thick. The underlying material is grayish brown sandy clay <br />• loam to 60 inches or more. <br />Ex. 16-25 <br />
