• Permeability is moderate. Available water capacity is moderate.
Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is slow, and the hazard
of water erosion is slight.
This unit is used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly basin wildrye,
western wheatgrass, mountain snowberry and mountain big sagebrush. Other
plants that characterize this site are muttongrass, slender wheatgrass,
common chokecherry and woods rose. The average annual production of air-dry
vegetation is about 2,500 pounds per acre.
If the range is overgrazed, the proportion of preferred forage plants
decreases and the proportion of less preferred forage plants increases.
Therefore, livestock grazing should be managed so that the desired balance of
preferred species is maintained in the plant community. Range seeding is
suitable if the range is in poor condition. The plants selected for seeding
• should meet the seasonal requirements of livestock or wildlife, or both.
Management practices suitable for use on this unit are proper range use,
deferred grazing, rotation grazing, and brush management. Brush management
improves deteriorated areas of range that are producing more woody shrubs than
were present in the potential plant community.
If this unit is used for homesite development, the main limitations are
rare hazard of flooding and moderate permeability. The limitation of moderate
permeability can be overcome by increasing the size of the absorption field.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIe. It is in Mountain Swale
range site.
34C--Coutis fine sandy loam, 3 to 12 percent slopes. This deep, some-
what excessively drained soil is in swales. It formed in alluvium derived
from sandstone. Elevation is 6,900 to 8,400 feet. The average annual pre-
cipitation is 20 to 25 inches, the average annual air temperature is 37 to
• 40 degrees F, and the frost-free season is 40 to 65 days.
Ex. 16-26
