• concern in installing septic tank absorption fields. Absorption lines should
be installed on the contour.
If the Moyerson soil is used for homesite development, the main limita-
tions are depth to bedrock, slope and shrink-swell potential. Excavation for
building sites is limited by the bedrock. If buildings are constructed on
this soil, properly designing foundations and footings and diverting runoff
away from buildings help to prevent structural damage because of shrinking and
swelling. The effects of shrinking and swelling can be minimized by using
proper engineering designs and by backfilling with material that has low
shrink-swell potential.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIIe. It is in Deep Clay Loam
range site.
23A--Gapo clay loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes. This deep, poorly drained
soil is on flood plains. It formed in mixed, alluvium. Elevation is 6,100 to
• 8,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is 15 to 20 inches, the average
annual air temperature is 37 to 40 degrees F, and the frost-free season is 40
to 65 days.
Typically, the surface layer is dark gray clay loam. The underlying
material is stratified light gray to dark grayish brown clay extending to
60 inches or more.
Included in this unit are small areas of Milren loam and Venable loam.
Permeability of this Gapo soil is very slow. Effective rooting depth is
60 inches or more. Available water capacity is moderate. Runoff is slow, and
the hazard of water erosion is slight.
This unit is used for irrigated hay and nonirrigated winter wheat and
spring barley.
• This unit is well suited to irrigated hay. It has few limitations.
Fertilizer is needed to insure optimum growth of grasses and legumes. To
Ex. 16-24
